Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that originated in China as early as 2500 years ago, involving the insertion of solid acupuncture needles into the skin at specific points on the body to achieve a therapeutic effect.

Acupuncture itself is used to encourage natural healing, improve mood and energy, reduce or relieve pain and improve function of affected areas of the body. It is safe and effective and is often successfully used as an alternative to medications or even surgery.

Acupuncture points are places on the skin that have a lower resistance to the passage of electricity than the surrounding skin and are part of a network of points that were mapped centuries ago by the Chinese. Most are found along ‘meridians’ or ‘channels’ that are believed to be the pathways by which energy or Qi (pronounced ‘Chee’) flows through the body.

Other TCM modalities often used in our clinic include the following:

  • Electro-acupuncture: needles inserted at acupuncture points are electrically stimulated with various frequencies and voltages by attachment to a battery-powered machine using wires with small clips on the ends. Mild, low-frequency stimulation is used most often in cases of acute or chronic pain.
  • Moxibustion: Sometimes the needles are heated by holding a lighted cigar-shaped piece of tightly-packed ‘smokeless’ moxa (mugwort herb) near the handles of the needles. This technique is known as moxibustion or ‘moxa’. TCM indicates the use of moxa when there is a ‘cold syndrome’ or for moving energy. It induces a comfortable feeling of heat at the area of application and illicits a long-lasting therapeutic effect.
  • Acupressure: a technique involving pressure on acupuncture points using the thumbs or fingers, capable of giving relief of symptoms in responsive individuals.
  • Tui Na: a Chinese massage technique that employs points closely corresponding to acupuncture points and aids in the treatment of pain.

If you have suffered a workplace injury, you may be eligible for health care benefits including physiotherapy, acupuncture and massage treatment (in conjunction with physiotherapy) covered by WHSCC.

As Back on Track has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with WHSCC, WHSCC will cover treatment provided by our therapists – WHSCC will pay Back on Track directly for your treatment sessions.

“In the case of new injuries, an injured worker may be referred to a physiotherapist by their family physician; alternately, he/she may contact a clinic directly, provided presentation to the clinic is within two weeks from the date of injury. The Commission only covers physiotherapy treatment provided by clinics who have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Commission, so it is important to confirm this when booking your appointment. The Commission will automatically approve 12 initial physiotherapy treatments for new injuries. For injuries that are greater than 2 weeks duration, a physician referral is required prior to initiation of physiotherapy services.”  WHSCC – Physiotherapy

If you are within 2 weeks of a workplace injury, WHSCC will allow you to attend for a physiotherapy assessment without a claim number.Your physiotherapist will submit your assessment on-line to WHSCC on the day of your initial visit.  WHSCC will cover the cost of this visit, and will then advise Back On Track directly if further sessions will be authorized.
